7 Things to do in Gili “T”

Gili T or Trawangan is the busier of the three Gili Islands in that it attracts the most visitors to this tropical paradise in Indonesia, just 30 minutes boat ride from Lombok and within easy reach of Bali by a fast boat.

Snorkel with Turtles

The Gili Islands are known as the Turtle capital of the world and the best places for snorkeling are along the beach areas where you can rent the equipment needed from dive shops or kiosks by the hour or the day. There are usually plenty of turtles and other fish to be seen but beware of the coral as some of it is razor sharp.

Bicycle round the Island

There is no motorized transport on the Gili Islands and if you have heavy bags to carry to your hotel on arrival then you can use a horse and cart known locally as a Cidomo. You should negotiate a price before beginning your journey. The island is small and you can easily cycle the path around the perimeter in just one hour but be prepared to push or even carry the bike over some sandy sections. Bicycles can be rented from kiosks for Rp20000 per hour and some hotels and hostels offer free bicycle use.

Sunset Swing Photo

For the best views of the sunset head for the west side of the island, find a spot in a beach bar, on the sand or take a picture of you on a swing with the sun setting behind you for a really cool picture. Two popular bars for sunsets are about a 30 minute walk or ten minutes by bicycle from the pier and head south along the track. If you require some peace and tranquility then head a little further along the coast.

Beach Party

You will not need to look very hard to find a beach party on the island, the main bars take it in turns to host late night gigs until about 4am. You just need to ask where the beach party will be located on any night. You should try and drink at the western owned bars as the locally produced alcohol has in the past contained methanol and has caused serious injury, even deaths when consumed.

Learn to Dive

There is a thriving dive industry on the Gili Islands with about a dozen dive shops on Gili T. All the dive shops run daily or longer courses for you to learn to dive in a world class centre of diving, learning in warm water from professional instructors. You can learn to do fun dives, technical diving or diving to wreck sites.

Horse Back Riding

If you would like to try horseback riding you will find they are run at a very sedate pace that is ideal for beginners. The Stud Horse Riding Adventure has a small stable of horses although you will need to book at least a day in advance if you would like to take one of their popular sunset rides.

Boat trip around the Islands

There are a few operators that offer boat trips around the island of Gili T or to the neighbouring Gili islands or further afield to Lombok or Komodo.
